The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Bashorun Hon. Askia Ogieh has stated that with

clarity of purpose and resolve to make a difference, the new DESOPADEC Board would not let Deltans down.

Declaring open a 3-day capacity building workshop for staff of the Media and Public Affairs Unit at Sheraton Hotel and Towers in Lagos recently, Bashoeun Ogieh said being the very first capacity building programme by the new management of DESOPADEC, the Commission had just opened another historic chapter in the annals of its operation.

He urged the participants to be excited being on a voyage charting a new course for efficient rebranding of the Commission along contemporary best practices, noting that the Media and Public Affairs Unit was turning out to be a trailblazer and the first beneficiary of the great future desired by management.

In his words; Ï must quickly assure you that this present management is committed to driving the vision of his Excellency, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa through the legal instrumentality of the Commission, and we shall not rest on our oars until every man, woman, boy or girl across our mandate areas feel our impact. We fully understand the mandate and the enormity of the responsibilities thrust on us, and we know that with clarity of purpose and resolute resolve to make a difference, we cannot let Deltans down".

He emphasised that the training was put together as a first signal to the desire of the new Board to fine tune the process of managing the image of the Commission in its avowed delivery of quality projects and in builfing the human capacity of the people in the mandate areas. He therefore assured staff participants of well grounded human capital resource, armed with fresher perspectives, current techniques and exposed to best practices in work ethics and operational effectiveness.

Explaining the need for creating a good image for the Commission, the Uzere High Chief noted that the Commission is as good as its perception by our critical stakeholders. According to him, "This underpins the need to communicate appropriate information about the Commission to both internal and external publics. All our efforts and struggles may end up in futility if they are not properly, professionally and timeously communicated with depth of precision and creativity".

"We have designed this very workshop to set the groundwork for a vibrant Media and Public Affairs Unit, with a view to enabling the department cultivate and firm up relationships with the media, master the art of crisis communication, handle all forms of reputational risks associated with dealing with our publics and most important of all, building a virile image occasioned by our hard work with a view to eliciting the right perceptions from our mandate areas, Deltans and Nigeria at large.

"You will agree with me that this task is enormous, hence all hands must be on deck to actualise it. We must state that management requires nothing but the right attitude, discipline and commitment from you all to reposition this Commission. We assure you that we will not relent on our part to equip and give you the needed tools, requisite professional training and adequate motivation to get the work done. Let us write history together", he added.

Highlight of the training was a guided tour of three media houses, to wit, DAAR Communications PLC (Owners of African Idependent Television AIT/Raypower/Faaji FM), the Sun and Vanguard newspapers respectively. A total of seventeen senior staff of the Unit and other Departments attended the 3-day workshop.
